How Many Patents Already Exist?

In the United States alone, there are more than 7 MILLION Patents currently being either held or tracked by the USPTO, the Dept of Commerce and any number of Internet search engines that you care to use.

The USPTO has a database that holds information that trademark and copyright law dates all the way back to 1790 and goes up to 2005. This database breaks it down into 7 different categories: Design, Plant, Reissue, Defensive Publications, SIR an AI. The database is lists the number of Patents issued from 1790 – 1975 and those issued from 1976 to 2005.
